Cleveland Mediation Center (CMC) has been mediating disputes and providing conflict resolution and mediation training to the greater Cleveland area since 1981, distinguishing CMC as the first community mediation center in Ohio. We are proud that throughout our history, we have committed to achieving the National Association for Community Mediation’s nine hallmarks of a community mediation center.
CMC promotes just and peaceful community in Northeast Ohio by honoring all people, building their capacity to act, and facilitating opportunities for them to engage in conflict constructively.
We fulfill our mission by continuing our work in the community to facilitate dialogue with neighbors, community members, families or other parties, stop evictions, prevent homelessness, improve school attendance, and train those who wish to mediate.
There is no fee for mediations between landlords and tenants.
Shelter Mediation Program
Cleveland Mediation Center offers mediation and conflict coaching services to Cleveland area shelters. Mediators work to help repair communication between shelter residents and staff to prevent involuntary shelter discharges and to help parties build a housing plan.
CMC’s Shelter Mediation program started in January of 2014. With the help of the Cuyahoga County Continuum of Care which included Frontline Service, Coordinated Intake and family shelters such as Family Promise of Greater Cleveland, Zelma George Family Shelter, and West Side Catholic Center to name a few. CMC staff was able to reach out and serve 53 individuals in the first year of the program.
The Shelter Mediation program helps participants employing the shelter resources to resolve a conflict that could potentially put them at risk of being involuntarily discharged from the shelter and its programs. Additionally, it allows the opportunity for clients to feel like they are being heard and understood during a time they might feel they have no voice.

- Community Mediation The Community Mediation program offers community members access to mediation services that will help resolve conflicts within their neighborhoods and communities. Mediation is a way for people to resolve their disputes in a private confidential setting with the assistance of a neutral third party. Issues that can be mediated include neighbor to neighbor conflicts such as noise or property issues, landlord/ tenant issues, or other similar issues that can arise between people. As a community mediation center, CMC is well grounded in mediating disputes between neighbors. While the outcome of mediation is determined by the parties, the mediator helps the parties to listen, understand one another, and come to a mutually beneficial resolution. When those in conflict are given the opportunity to work out their differences, stronger relationships are built and better communication is fostered, leading to a more peaceful community.
- Family Mediation The Family Mediation Program provides mediation services to families with issues including parent/child conflict, grandparent or extended family visitation, care of elder parents, and sibling conflict. Mediation is a way for family members to resolve their disputes in a private confidential setting with the assistance of a neutral third party whose role is to assist the parties in reaching an agreement on disputed issues by identifying issues, exploring options and facilitating communication between the parties.
